A Prefab, Home Outfitted By IKEA

A prefab home, outfitted by IKEA

A line of prefabricated homes outfitted with IKEA merchandise, flooring and cabinetry is the project of an Oregon design firm and does not signal the launch of IKEA into the popular prefab housing market, the Swedish furniture giant’s U.S. division said on Friday.

“IKEA is neither the manufacturer nor the retailer of these prefabricated homes,” the company said in a statement. It said its IKEA Portland store had participated in a collaboration with Ideabox on a new line of prefab homes, “Aktiv,” showcased at the Portland Home & Garden Show recently.

After the show, reports said IKEA and Ideabox were collaborating to launch the homes in the U.S. Ideabox’s 745-square-foot Aktiv model home is priced at US$86,500. Those reports and an earlier version of the story on FinancialPost.com were inaccurate.

Aktiv, (that’s Swedish for “active”), is completely outfitted with IKEA systems, such as Tundra maple flooring and Pax wardrobe systems.

“For those of us IKEA fans, the pure delight of walking and imagining our way through an IKEA store quickly turns to the daunting task of assembly when we get home,” Ideabox says of its prefab homes.
”Not a worry … When your Ideabox Aktiv arrives, all of the cabinets, countertops, and flooring are installed … it’s like the best of everything!”

The houses are boxy and resemble a basic trailer — for “no wasted space,” according to Ideabox – and are made with fibre-cement siding, corrugated metal, and topped with a metal roof.
