7 Easy ways to cut your heating bills

February 23, 2015 - Updated: February 23, 2015

Small changes that cut energy waste can save the average homeowner as much as $770 a year on their energy bill, according to Direct Energy.

The company came up with the number by looking at seven things a homeowner can do. It based the savings on current energy prices and an 1,860 square foot, 40-year-old, two-storey home.

The tips and annual savings are:

  • Replace your furnace filter every three months, $53;

  • Seal leaks around doors, windows and exterior wall electrical outlets, $56.20;

  • Insulate your basement to prevent warm air escaping along joist cavities, $99.30

  • Insulate your attic with a minimum of 12 inches of insulation, $61.40

  • Lower your thermostat by two degrees, $150;

  • if our furnace is old, or needs frequent repairs, upgrade to a high efficiency furnace, $299.70;

  • Clean ducts of dust and debris which helps your furnace work more efficiently.

The company offers these additional tips:

  • Add a humidifier: This lets you turn the thermostat down and be comfortable at lower temperatures.

  • Let the sun in: Open curtains on south-facing windows during the day to allow sunlight to naturally heat your home.

  • Change the direction of air flow on your ceiling fan. In winter the blades should operate in a clockwise direction helping to push the warm air from the ceiling down into the room.
